Building, Construction and Materials

This module is about construction and material. How do we use material, what kind of material is best for this type of application? What kind of foundation should be used in this type of site?

Project 1

In this project, we are required to produce a 2 pages analysis of our chosen building. We are required to cover the architectural and structural materials that is used in the chosen building.

I chose the World Trade Center Twin Towers because it was the first result I got when I was searching the architect Minoru Yamasaki and to my surprise, no one actually choose this as their building. But I quickly realised that this building is essentially just steel and glass. I need to dive a lot deeper into it to get all 7 materials that is needed for this project. Luckily, due to an unfortunate event, this is one of if not the most analysed building ever, so it was not hard for me to research.

Project 2

In this project, we were required to produce drawings and a model for a 2-storey terrace house. 

After weeks of procrastination, our group chose our house and started to work on it. Even though we had a few relatively inactive group members, we still managed to finish the project. However, I think time management is really important, if we had good time management, we could have finished the project much earlier and work at projects of other module.

Reflection

I think in this module, we learnt a lot of theory based things. We get to understand buildings structurally and in a way that changes how we are designing because not only we need to think about the aesthetics but also the practicality of the building like how is the design structurally stable. This module actually aid us a lot in other module because we are dealing with site as well so how our design can be safe and stable cooperate with the site is also important. 

Through this semester, it really teaches me a lot and these are the TGCs I acquired through this module:

TGC 1.1 Able to put theories into practice. A big part of this module is theory. There are a lot of lectures and through all the lectures, I am able to understand the importance of it and use the knowledge into the projects that is given to me.

TGC 5.1 Understand team dynamics and mobilize the power of teams. I understand now the importance of teamwork through project 2, and how can we as a team can work dynamically to finished our work.
